Taken (a poem)

In honour of Verishima Unokyur, who died by suicide, and the family who survive him

And so you were taken,
right at the start of the year,
you came to the end of your years.

Your own are left forsaken,
burdened hence with this permanent
question mark in their lives’ sentence.

Yet, were you truly taken,
or, did you take yourself, as it seems?
Was it, as some say, via village-enabled means?

We who remain are shaken,
some wondering what hope for the rest,
if those with means may yet be depressed?

Still, are we not mistaken
to think depression would pity youth
when death is no less…uncouth?

Suicide is hard for those who are left behind. If you know anyone who lost someone to suicide, reach out to them, because they’re at risk too. And if you know anyone who talks about being tired of life, reach out too.

And don’t think anyone is too young or too well off or too traditional or too anything.

Depression, like death, can happen to anyone.

From his Twitter, where his handle, in cruel irony, was @cause_am_Batman (he was a big DC Comics fan)

Ever wondered why people “commit” suicide?

Ever wondered why people “commit” suicide?

Ever wondered why people “commit” suicide?

Ever wondered why people “commit” suicide?
